About This Site
Best Outdoors Picks is about the gear that makes everyday time outside easier: trekking poles for uneven trails, hands-free leashes for walking a dog that pulls, water bottles that actually get used, hiking shoes that stay comfortable over the miles, and sun hats for long summer mornings. Every pick is used for months on real walks before we write about it, and we say plainly what did not work.

Trail and Walking Safety
Outdoor walking carries real risks that no product removes. Uneven ground, wet roots, loose gravel and ice cause falls; trekking poles help with balance but must be adjusted to the right height and checked that their locks are tight before every walk, since a pole that collapses under load can cause the fall it was meant to prevent.
A hands-free leash keeps your hands free but ties a pulling dog to your waist. On ice, steep ground, near traffic or around wildlife, hold the leash by hand or unclip the waist belt so a sudden lunge cannot pull you off your feet. Check the buckle and clasp regularly for wear.
Heat, sun and dehydration build up faster than people expect, for you and for your dog. Carry more water than you think you need, walk in the cooler hours in summer, test pavement with the back of your hand before your dog walks on it, and watch for heavy panting, stumbling or confusion. A sun hat does not replace sunscreen or shade.
Tell someone where you are going on longer trails, carry a charged phone, and check the weather before you leave. If you have a heart, joint or balance condition, ask your doctor what level of walking is right for you. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
